Regular and thorough eye examinations are the only opportunity you have to detect and treat any eye diseases or disorders while they are in the early stages. At James Deavers, OD, PA, we offer a number of eye health tests as part of your comprehensive eye examination in addition to a visual acuity test. In this manner, we can be confident in our detailed assessment of your eyes and determine if you are experiencing any of the eye conditions that are grouped under the general heading of glaucoma. Ladson glaucoma care begins with your in-depth eye examination at our office.

Macular degeneration is actually not just one disease, but a group of related eye illnesses that have to do with a loss of detail vision, or central vision. The most common form of macular degeneration is age-related macular degeneration, which is why our Ladson eye doctor stresses the importance of knowing about conditions like macular degeneration as you advance in age. Age-related macular degeneration typically affects patients over the age of sixty. Age-related macular degeneration comes in two different forms—either “wet” age-related macular degeneration, or “dry” age-related macular degeneration. Dry age-related macular degeneration is a much slower process than wet ARMD, and dry ARMD is the more common form out of the two. Because dry ARMD develops so gradually, it can be hard to realize that there is a problem until the condition has gotten significantly far in its development. That is why it is important to have your eyes examined regularly, especially as you grow older.

Regular eye exams allow our Ladson eye doctor find warning signs that you would not be able to otherwise, allowing treatments to be recommended earlier and in most cases making the condition much more manageable in the long run. Wet ARMD creates much more noticeable symptoms, and so if you are experiencing sudden changes in your vision you should schedule an appointment with us as soon as possible so that we can preserve your vision and do our best to prevent the condition form getting worse.

As you get older, your eyes are at a greater risk for developing a number of conditions. Our North Charleston optometrist, Dr. James Deavers, understands these risks and therefore gives his older patients the specialized attention and treatment that is necessary for the preservation of their vision and overall eye health. Macular degeneration is a term that is used to describe a group of related eye conditions that lead to the breakdown of your central and detail vision. There are two general types of age related macular degeneration called “wet” age related macular degeneration and “dry” age related macular degeneration. Unfortunately, the most common type of macular degeneration occurs so gradually that patients often do not realize they have it until their vision has already been significantly compromised. That is why it is important to visit Dr. Deavers regularly for eye exams so that we can detect conditions like this early.

Another common eye condition that occurs mostly in older people is the growth of cataracts. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye that makes it difficult to go through the everyday motions of life. You may find it difficult to see while reading, driving, or even reading the expression on someone’s face. Once cataracts have advanced significantly, surgical methods are necessary to correct the problem. A simple consultation with your local North Charleston optometrist, Dr. Deavers can help determine the severity of the cataract. Cataract surgery is quite simply and is usually very effective. A final eye condition that typically occurs in old age is presbyopia. If you are over the age of 40 and are finding that you have to hold your daily newspaper at arm’s length in order to make out the print, you may have presbyopia. Common symptoms that occur with presbyopia are eye strain, headache, and fatigue. Presbyopia can easily be correct using reading glasses, contact lenses, or eye surgery.
