Summerville Eye Care

Do you find yourself having to hold your reading material at arms length in order to see what you are reading clearly? Are you experiencing frequent headaches, eye strain, and fatigue? You may be developing what is known as presbyopia, an extremely common age-related eye condition that tends to develop around the age of 40 in most people, and it causes blurriness when looking at things close-up. It is simply a part of getting older; presbyopia can affect you even if you have never had any visual problems in the past. As you grow older, the lens in your eye changes. It loses some of its elasticity, which makes it difficult for the lens to focus. Presbyopia can easily be lived with the help of some corrective devices, such as contacts, or reading glasses. At our Summerville eye care facility, Dr. James Deavers can help detect presbyopia and offer you options for treatment.

When you visit Dr. James Deavers for a comprehensive eye examination, he’ll assess your vision to determine whether you have a refractive disorder, such as hyperopia or myopia.  But you may not know what it means to have a refractive disorder? Nearly one in four people are diagnosed with hyperopia, also known as farsightedness, meaning they are able to see well at a distance, but unable to see close objects clearly. There are several symptoms and signs that indicate you may be farsighted and will require vision correction. If you find yourself squinting, experiencing eye fatigue or strain while working on a computer or reading, or suffering from frequent headaches, you should schedule an exam with Dr. Deavers. Even if you have already been diagnosed with farsightedness by our Moncks Corner optometrist, you’ll need to have an eye exam with Dr. Deavers every year to see if your condition have worsened. Often, patients will experience eye strain and fatigue when their optical prescription is too weak to properly fix their vision.

Just like hyperopia, myopia is a common refractive disorder that affects roughly one third of the population. Myopia, otherwise known as nearsightedness is characterized by difficulty seeing objects at a distance, whether it’s two feet in front of your or twenty feet. If you are afflicted with myopia you may find yourself squinting or straining to see accurately while driving or watching television. Just like hyperopia, myopia is easily diagnosed by Dr. Deavers during your annual eye exam and vision assessment. Additionally, if you already use prescription glasses or contact lenses to correct your nearsightedness, if you begin to experience blurry vision, you may need to have your prescription updated.
